Woo, got back from the game tonight. Famous quotes...This is getting amusing. We've invaded Mexico from Texas with a camoflage tour bus containing Mojo Nixon and his band, a Mexican taco stand driven by an Arab from New York and his giant parrot, a spray-painted orange van owned and driven by a man wanted by the FCC for pirate radio, and the Holy 1955 Cadillac driven by a Texas college student and her plush toy.
So, what has the world gone and done since I've been gone...
Woo, here we go! Negotiations for technology sharing and bundling between MS and AOL have collapsed, and MS is pulling AOL off of its windows systems. It looks like this is a solid split, because MS has also severed ties to the Time Warner cores as well, and will not have the content from their databases. MS doesn't seem to care, and now...it would seem that AOL's initial contacts with Compaq, HP, and others may pay out.

RPG night tonight instead of anime...it's amusing. Overheard tonight:You're standing in a sorority dorm room, wearing most of your clothes, holding an empty tequila bottle, and talking with a stuffed doll who owes you ten bucks.+5 Holy Cadillac - Dispels red lights, police, and traffic within a 500 yard radius. It's fun.No news tonight. Must be at work tomorrow at 7am. Did get to see the championships for Battlebots, that's cool. I never said it wouldn't ever come back.
Kristi...BINGO! You sound like me now. (I was only referring to the battle of wits, I have you vastly outgunned otherwise, I'm sure) Criminals are not criminals because they don't know what the law is, criminals are criminals because they willingly break it - and need to be dealt with accordingly. Shame we don't have things like building highways as punishment anymore...not the chain gangs of old, no, but put the inmates to work doing something good. Get some use out of them, and make prison an unpopular place - "Hmm, if I get caught, I'm going to spend the next X years standing in the sun watching concrete dry. Do I really want to rob this store?" might start appearing in the heads of people. And is not the definition of "swift, certain, and severe" applicable to the death penalty? Perhaps not swift, but there are good reasons for that, but most definitely certain and severe. Sentenced to hard labor and building things that will be of help, like a highway, might be one hell of a deterrent. Lighter stuff, like groundskeeping and yardwork for other inmates. It'd be more useful than keeping them in cells for 23.5 hours a day, and you'd GET something from it in return.
Like you and Puu said - only the law abiding follow the law.
More after-school programs - we have them. They don't work. The government throws more money at it, and it grows bigger. Government participation in such things has a tendency to break things down, because you put a bureaucracy over control - and bureaucracies like our government are designed to be INefficient. And the amount of soft corruption that goes on makes it worthless to involve government. Efficient governments become dictatorial monsters, quickly. Stalin's Soviet Union and Hitler's Germany were VERY DAMNED efficient at whatever Hitler and Stalin wanted.
And regarding my grandmother, no, she was NOT an influence upon my life - she was invalid and we suspect (though never had her checked) that she was an alzheimer's patient, because she had the mental faculties of an older child until near the end, where she degenerated quickly. So I took care of her, more often than not. And my father...well, in the past...around...10 years, I've seen him ONCE. And he was an abusive parent when I was much younger. I won't go into detail, but let's say it was myself and my mother the whole time - and she did a pretty damn decent job of parenting me, so I would say it could be done by others. I guess I did learn responsibility quickly, with taking care of my grandmother, and I grew up damn fast with my father around. But I'm not any different from other people, so I don't see why others can't do well if they are brought up by someone who really does care.
I have the next layout for Spent Casings, which will probably be posted...whenever I feel like it. I will say this - TRB and I agree that this is definitely Ragabash's finest layout for this site. My thanks to the Eggplant.

Kristi...that's what I mean. The big issue is society and how we treat children...we did just fine with concealed weapons, firearms and the youth, and all sorts of things back a generation and more ago...have we really changed all that much? And yeah, we do a lot of point-counterpoint - and I for one like it. Getting into a good, solid intellectual debate with someone who I sense may actually sliiiiightly outgun me is nice. ^_~

Solar sail vessel has been repaired and is ready to go as soon as July.
How many of ya'll are old enough to remember the old Warsaw Pact? Well...anyone here want to take a look at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization? Creation of "a new economic and security bloc in central Asia" is the goal of this organization, which evolved out of the Shanghai Five - Russia, China, Kazakstan, Kyrgyztan, and Tajikistan. The S5 was created to ease Islamic tensions and deal with terrorism in the local areas, this time they're expanding to fight Western global dominance. How long before India, North Korea, and other SE Asian countries jump into the mix? One of the big points of the SCO's formation meeting was Chinese military assistance into Kyrgyztan should terrorist uprisings get worse there. Also on the agenda was how to get at the area's fairly large oil, natural gas, and mineral reserves.
They're fighting long years of distrust and conflict, trying to organize politically, militarily, and economically into an organization to fight the west - and they'll have over 1/6 of the global population to do it with. China DOES need US money - at the moment. So does Russia. Should they be able to find their own supplies of critical energy, and also foster growth and trade in the area...might the western governments wake up and find a broken leash one day?
And a pan of Tomb Raider, if anyone's interested. The critics hate it, can't be all bad. We'll see.
Going back to that missing lottery story, someone DID win the 46 million. June 11, lottery officials recieved a letter postmarked June 7 - two days before the one-year deadline - with the winning ticket in it. Seems they went to check a whole stack of tickets that day, and had found the winning one - and very promptly sent it in. Whoever the winner is, they are now 23.7 million dollars richer, having chosen the lump-sum payout. Until the Tax Man Cometh.
Kristi, yes the gangs DO provide the support structure - I'm saying that the family itself needs to. And it's not just a case of parents not being around - it's a case of the parents giving a damn about their kids. My mother worked, yes. I was home having to take care of my grandmother through most of my childhood life (polio survivor, arthritis, all kinds of troubles she had)...but I didn't turn out like that. I've seen families personally who the mother comes home, gets changed, goes out dancing again or out to meet guys, EVERY NIGHT, and leaves the kids to be babysat by TV. Even with 40 hour work weeks. And yes, it's difficult to raise kids nowadays - perhaps people should consider things more closely before popping out kids. It's NOT HARD to avoid that result - there's all kinds of precautions to take that anyone can afford, including abstinence. How many of those kids nowadays are born to mothers that "got it on" with someone they thought they loved, but skipped out of the relationship as soon as a kid showed up? Ah, free sex.

Surprise! Even I can miss stuff. China has worked up its large June wargames this year, with a difference - rather than working independently, each of the four major military branches are working on a unified effort. An army that can integrate its different branches poses increases in power exponentially, and is a far more capable fighting force. Let us not forget that the Russians have added a carrier to the ChiCom force, along with several destroyers that carry advanced anti-ship missiles that move at mach-2 9 feet off the surface of the water, and can be loaded with a 200 kiloton nuclear warhead. The scenario this time around is taking and holding an outlying Taiwanese island, and also fighting off an aircraft carrier.
Might I mention...that Taiwan doesn't have any, that we're the only power there that does?
China's also focussing on its CRITICAL areas as a war-fighting force - specifically, logistics. Before, they have had problems with C3 (command, communications, and control), logistics, and timing - all of these are to be addressed in this new batch of exercises. The Chinese are also working on incorporating the Soviet SU-27 fighter aircraft in the war trials.
Bird, congratulations on the Dean's List! ^_^ Write e-mails. XD Saturday is anime club so I will be home around 11 or so. Sunday I'll be on all day.
Sam-kun, take care! We'll miss youuuu!
Pamu, are they being mean and making short jokes about you again? Just because your legs are injured and you can't kick isn't an excuse to be mean...
...it's a darn good reason. *ducks and hides* And that song is wrong - at least you didn't try singing I Am The Walrus at them. :p
Meg...many big points on the CCS MySTing. ^_^ I can SEE this happening, as a sort of Mini-Chibi Theater - do an episode of CCS based on the fanfics, and cut back and forth with the cast doing their hijinks...whipping out character masks for the shots like "Sakura: (Sonomi) Not in my house you don't!" and have this writhing, frothing Eriol in the back...it could be done!

Well. After the FBI found the murderer Lon Horiuchi's actions to be completely unconstitutional in shooting and killing Vicki Weaver as she stood holding her infant son...after a Federal appeals court found that Lon Horiuchi could be tried for manslaughter for shooting and killing Vicki Weaver as she stood holding her infant son...Idaho prosecutor drops the case against him.
"Based upon the entirety of the circumstances surrounding this criminal action, it is unlikely the state will be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the criminal act set forth in the information on file," Benson's office argued in court papers.
Really. Are you telling me that a jury of people from Idaho, where the case is currently, would not vote to convict the man? Exactly what are you smoking, sir? And what gives you the right to give up a judgement before a popular court against the illegal, unconstitutional, and unwarranted use of force against an unarmed civilian in her home? Sir, SWAT entry teams going into homes on a drug raid face down armed criminals - at literally contact range, in a chaotic situation, and DO NOT SHOOT - they take them alive. Yur dear boy was camouflaged, concealed, observing the house from a SNIPER position, and then used a precision rifle in a deliberate act to take the life of Mrs. Weaver - not in a position of snap-judgements and instant on-the-spot calls. He KNEW what he was doing, Mr. Prosecutor - and he pulled the trigger. WHY WILL YOU NOT PUT HIM ON TRIAL, SIR?
So perhaps the aptly and ominously mentioned "supremacy clause", where federal agents may not be tried for their actions no matter what, never was truly reversed. Is it the policy of the United States Government that a Federal Agent truly has a license to kill? No other agents at Waco, even the ones visible massacring over a dozen people on the FLIR videotapes, were ever prosecuted. None of the people driving the heavy armor - including an M2 Bradley, an M60 Patton, and several other tanks - were ever prosecuted. Even after videotapes taken after the fire show quite clearly charred bodies lying in the path the tanks took driving THROUGH the building that are missing entire sections cleanly cut off, noone else was prosecuted.
Lon Horiuchi was the one who murdered Vicki Weaver. He was also the one responsible for a majority of the deaths at Waco - all of the ones who died on the last day, died because of his "observations" that were not verified by anyone else. It was because of this man's actions that Timothy McVeigh's rage against the government he served as a US soldier in the Gulf War just 2 years and one president earlier began. And will the government do anything to him? No. Horiuchi, even today, is STILL an active agent with the FBI.
Another story from CNN goes further into detail about the government's opinion of events there - Horiuchi's claim that he was not firing at Vicki Weaver, but at Kevin Harris - believed armed (quite very legal in Idaho) and going into the house. Originally, government agents had contacted Randy Weaver about constructing a pair of short-barreled shotguns without registering them on the NFA lists. Weaver turned them down, repeatedly, until he finally gave in to their constant requests and demands. Does the word entrapment come to mind? When the court date came for Weaver, he stayed home in protest. The government set up "surveillance" of his cabin, and several months later Weaver's son and a Federal Marshal are killed in a shootout. The next day, for no yet-known reason, Horiuchi killed Weaver's wife - supposedly shooting at Kevin Harris to protect a government helicopter.
If Lon Horiuchi could not tell the difference with a scoped rifle between a woman with a baby and a man threatening a government helicopter - what the f*ck was he doing pulling any triggers?
Personally...I'd give the people up in Idaho even money on an attempt against Horiuchi, probably soon. Judgement is mine, sayeth the Lord...and I think someone's going to arrange an early trial.
On the subject of gun control...well, the recent assault in Japan ought to make it pretty damned obvious - it's not the guns that cause problems, people can and will still commit mass-murder with whatever they can get their hands on. It's more a case of what's WRONG with this country - fourty years ago, New York City in 1961, highschoolers carried rifles through the city itself, and took them to school - and learned how to use them. There was respect for the firearm and knowledge about its use. There was no foolish gang posturing and "disrespect" back then. Take care of your children. Give them what they need, not what they think they want at the time. How about a return to good "old-fashioned" things like family values and morality? Give the kids a reason to care, and teach respect and honor the RIGHT way. Maybe THEN we might be able to restore a safe youth.

California power companies to face a grand jury about whether or not they were "gouging" customers for power. Why not put the governor and state congress up there too for failing to provide ENOUGH electricity? The problem's the SUPPLY, or lack thereof - the prices simply reflect the fact there is no more electricity, except for barrel scrapings from power plants that are fined heavily for use since they are very old and outdated. Don't listen to the lies from Davis, he wants to keep his job in 2002 - California voters, REMEMBER THIS!
And let's not forget this either - Gray Davis agreed to pay higher power rates in contracts than even the spot rates are now - so if anyone wants to know another reason why the power's so high, well, here's some numbers. Davis signed a contract to buy power at 154 dollars per megawatt-hour for peak and 95 for off-peak. Comparitively, power on the open market is below $100/mh peak and under $20 for non-peak rates. Davis' energy advisr calls this "a well thought-through plan of action", while Pete Navarro (a famous name for San Diegans) - an economist professor at UCI, NOT part of the government that did this - calls it "a long-term strategy for a short-term crisis". Personally, I call it a scheme - Davis signs long-term very-high-cost power contracts, ignoring the fact that lower prices are out there. Then, citing the ultrahigh prices, he simply blames the power companies. And tries to get all his contracts and records sealed (not a joke, see the story) so that noone can call him on his shamefaced duplicitous lie.

Korean Air pilots end their strike and go back to work, however the general strike is expanding. Nurses, admin staff, and other personnel from 8 hospitals walked today, causing a major slowdown in treatments. The workers are striking for a mandated 40-hour work-week, wage increases, cessation of mass layoffs, and improvements in labor law, freedom of speech, private schools, and easier union organization.
Sakura, I don't know...but it seems like S'Ko is like one if those kinetic sculptures, where it keeps running and running while the bolts work out of the holes, and eventually the whole thing disintegrates. Perhaps, in this case...'s time to get rid of the geezers. If the country's being run into the ground by these guys...
And in Indonesia striking workers face off against police in Jakarta. The workers are demanding the government revoke new labor laws that eliminate severance or pensions for retired employees, and that make it easier for employers to fire workers. The strikers broke down the gates to the Parliament building but were turned back at the goal line by police with tear gas and warning shots. In other provincial capitals similar events took place, however the civilians did not make it into the government buildings. Almost, guys...almost.
As part of their new alliance, Russia and India have tested a new cruise missile design using both Indian and Russian equipment. It's capable of 170 miles of travel, and is able to perform in a sea-skimming role - attacking ships at sea underneath the radar coverage. One of the New Delhi newspapes just happens to mention that it's capable of striking a large portion of Pakistan - well, what's the payload? Can it carry any of the nuclear weapons that the Indians developed, or perhaps some more refined & compact ones from the Russian arsenals? The two nations are also teaming up to create next-generation jet aircraft, "the latest type of submarine", and the Il-214, a new design of transport aircraft. They're getting MIGHTY cozy, and what's India doing developing all kinds of new major hardware? The Russians have the know-how...the Indians have the personnel and the ability to build. Cease-fire agreement between Palestinians and Israel, which is hoped to lead to the next steps of the Mitchell Report - namely, a freeze on Israeli construction in the Gaza and the West Bank, a cooperative security effort with both Israeli and Palestinian guards, a Pallie renunciation of terrorism, and Pallie police keeping citizens from firing on Israelis. The original agreement also included a buffer zone, however the Palestinians rejected it and the Israelis agreed. The Israelis are also calling for the arrest of Islamic Jihad and Hamas leaders, Arafat says he will not do so unless any crimes were committed against Israelis after June 1.
Time to test his promise, three suspected Palestinians gunned down a Greek monk today believing him to be an Israeli. Will Arafat follow through and find out who did it and prosecute?

Major strike in S. Korea could bring much of the country to a halt and is prompting the government to declare the mass strike illegal. 55,000 people across the country are fighting government-led "restructuring" following the major economic difficulties several years ago, the unions claiming that the restructuring is hurting the workers. However, the strike is quite major - 80% of Korean Airlines is shut down, and the international markets are not looking upon the possible economic woes with a good eye. Tomorrow, workers from 18 hospitals are expected to walk off the job. Sakura-san, any comment?

Well, it's over, justice has been served. Personally, I would just prefer a firing squad, but the deed's done the way the people told the government to do it. End of paragraph, end of chapter, and a closed book.
Kristi, go look back at the rant on UN gun control - the guys who put the 2nd amendment in there put it in there for the people to be able to combat their government directly - go look at the quotes from the people who wrote it. Yes, the modern definition of the word "militia" are the different state organizations. However, to refute your statement regarding the scope of the "militia" and who the 2nd amendment affects, George Mason himself defined the militia as basically all of the people except certain government officials. I.E., everybody. Change militia to citizenry and you reach back to the original intent of the constitution.
Don't get me wrong - I'm NOT advocating war against the government. I think our system is damned good compared to other things out there. I do say that there are problems that seriously need to be addressed both with policy and with personnel, but it's not yet time to dust off certain sections of the Constitution and change things in a big, violent way.
I'm curious - why don't you support concealed carry laws? There was a recent poll that's garnered a LOT of controversy, the question was: In the last year, have you had to use a firearm to protect your life? An even 1% of the respondents said yes. Expand said poll to cover the rest of the country like we do with all other polls, and that's over 2.5 million people, nationwide, who have probably saved their lives with concealed carry laws. Famous examples? Luby's Restaurant, in Texas. Suzanna Hupp goes to dinner with her parents. Hupp is a gun owner and keeps a .38 revolver with her in her car. However, due to the (at-the-time) lack of concealed-weapon carry in Texas, and laws that she could not carry into businesses, her firearm was left behind in her vehicle. During dinner, an insane man drove his truck through the windows and into the restaurant, and began shooting with his own firearm. He shot and killed 23 people in the restaurant, including Hupp's parents. Had she had her revolver, the man might have gotten off one or two rounds before she returned fire and killed him. She since got concealed-weapon carry laws in Texas passed through, and is now in the Texas State Congress. And, wherever you look that has concealed-carry laws, crime DROPS. CCW holders are thoroughly checked out by the police - and then authorized. We're the good guys.
